Travelling from Mauritius to Europe: visas and documents to check
With a Mauritius passport you do not need a visa for a short stay in the Schengen area, up to 90 days in any 180. You do need a valid passport, and you will need ETIAS once it starts. Türkiye needs a visa if you leave the airport.

Read this first. This is a summary of official pages as we read them on 2 October 2026. It is not legal advice, and rules change: check the official sources before you book and again before you fly. The decision to let you in always belongs to the border officer.
Schengen: no visa for short stays
Mauritius is on the EU list of nationalities exempt from the short-stay visa requirement, in Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806.
A short stay means up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area, which includes Portugal. A festival week and a few days in Lisbon sit well inside that.
Your passport
Validity
The EU asks that your passport be valid for at least three months after the date you intend to leave, and that it was issued within the previous ten years on the day you enter.
Renewing in Mauritius
The Passport and Immigration Office aims to issue a passport within four working days of payment; that is an objective, not a promise. Renewal needs form PF 136A, your previous passport, two photos and your identity card, plus marriage or divorce papers where they apply. Check the current fee with the office.
At the border: the Entry/Exit System
Since 12 October 2025, and fully since 10 April 2026, the EU's Entry/Exit System has recorded each entry and exit of non-EU travellers, including visa-exempt ones like Mauritius passport holders.
It stores a face image, fingerprints and your passport data, and it replaces passport stamps. Expect to give your fingerprints and a photo at the border.
ETIAS: not yet, but coming
ETIAS is the travel authorisation that visa-exempt travellers will need for 30 European countries, including Portugal. On 2 October 2026 the official EU site said it was not in operation and that no applications were being collected.
The EU will announce the start date several months ahead. Mauritius is on the list of nationalities that will need it, and the fee shown is €20. If you travel in 2027, check the official site before you fly, and apply only there.
A stopover in Türkiye
Ordinary Mauritius passport holders need a visa for Türkiye: a one-month multiple-entry e-Visa online, or a three-month visa from a Turkish embassy or consulate.
If you only change planes in Istanbul and stay in the transit lounge, the foreign ministry says you do not need a transit visa. Leaving the airport, even for a night, needs the visa. More in Istanbul and Cappadocia after Boom.
A simple timeline
- Now: compare your passport's expiry and issue dates with your return date. If it falls short, start the renewal; the office aims for four working days after payment, but give yourself far more time.
- When you book a stay in Türkiye: plan the e-Visa.
- A few weeks before you fly: check the ETIAS page again. If it has started, apply on the official site only.
- At the border: expect fingerprints and a photo for the Entry/Exit System on your first entry.
When you arrive from Istanbul
On a routing like our Boom flight packages, Mauritius to Istanbul and then Istanbul to Lisbon, you stay airside in Istanbul, and Lisbon is your first entry into the Schengen area. That is where the border check and the Entry/Exit System registration happen.
A checklist before you book
- Passport valid three months beyond your return date, and issued within ten years.
- ETIAS status on the official EU site, again a few weeks before you fly.
- A Turkish visa if your trip includes a stay in Türkiye.
- Your festival ticket in your own name, if you are going to Boom 2027.
